A stock trading at ₹1,500 has a face value of ₹10. So what exactly is face value — and why does it even matter? 🤔
It's one of those terms that shows up everywhere in the stock market, yet most beginners scroll past it without really understanding it.
Here's what you need to know:
📄 Face Value is the original value of a share as stated by the company at the time of issue. It's also called par value.
💡 It has nothing to do with the market price — a stock can trade at 100x its face value based on demand and company performance.
📊 But it still matters because:
→ Dividends are often calculated as a percentage of face value
→ Stock splits are defined in terms of face value
→ It appears in every company's financial statements
What most beginners get confused about:
→ Thinking face value = current price
→ Not understanding why it stays fixed while market price keeps moving
Once you understand face value, stock splits and dividends start making a lot more sense.
